Higher Skills Higher Growth: Placements for Students

RNN Group is working in collaboration with Sheffield Hallam University and The Sheffield College to provide meaningful work placements, funding, and business insights, to SMEs, start-ups, and microbusinesses across the Sheffield City Region.

Through our Colleges, Rotherham CollegeNorth Notts College and Dearne Valley College, as well as RNN Training (part of RNN Group), our dedicated apprenticeship programme, businesses in the region can expand and thrive, whilst students can develop and apply their knowledge and skills in real working environments.

Sean Ibrahim, Project Lead for the Higher Skills Higher Growth project, at RNN Group, described the project as being a collaborative effort between the involved educational institutions, which will benefit communities, students and industries in the region.

Sean went on to outline the process in which Higher Skills Higher Growth helps businesses and the specific advantages which the programme offers.

He said: “Initially we work collaboratively with an organisation to identify skill gaps and training needs, before offering quality, impartial advice from experienced professionals within the industry. This includes identifying potential funding and grant opportunities for the business.

Thereafter, where skill and training gaps require, we provide additional capacity for the organisation, through well-designed, meaningful, work placements.”

The invaluable industry and work experience that students gain while on placement through the Higher Skills Higher Growth project was underlined by sean.

He said: “Students should get work experience. Experience counts all the time. Academic skills are an integral part of society, but the application of these skills, and more importantly applying the skills in the real world, for real companies is what will make students stand out in their future careers.

Sean went on to explain the importance of finding the right fit for students and their placement.

He said: “We try to get projects that would interest the students, projects that they can go home and feel proud about.

We want Higher Skills Higher Growth to be a programme both employers and students are proud to be a part of.”
