Turing Scheme: Students Create Lifetime Memories in Bali, Indonesia

Two unforgettable weeks in Bali have left our students with more than just memories – theyโ€™ve gained a new outlook on the world.

From ancient traditions and environmental innovations to moments of quiet reflection, the trip has shaped their perspective in ways they never imagined.

Black Hand Gang: Print Workshop

Students had the opportunity to learn about the process of printmaking with Black Hand Gang, creating their own prints using a traditional technique.

They explored how intricate designs are formed through layers of ink and texture.

Siadja Gallery: Traditional Mask Painting

While painting traditional Balinese masks, the group unleashed their creativity and gained a deeper appreciation for the cultural significance behind the masks.

These intricate works of art are central to Baliโ€™s religious ceremonies, allowing participants to connect with the islandโ€™s spiritual and artistic traditions.

Tegalalang Rice Terrace: Baliโ€™s Iconic Landscape

With panoramic views of lush greenery, students marvelled at the beauty of the Tegalalang Rice Terrace.

Through exploring its sustainable farming methods, they learned how this UNESCO World Heritage site has maintained its agricultural traditions over centuries.

Kumulilir Coffee Plantation: Tea and Coffee Tasting

At Kumulilir Coffee Plantation, students sampled a variety of local teas and coffees, learning about Baliโ€™s rich coffee culture.

They discovered the process of cultivating, roasting, and brewing coffee, as well as the significance of coffee in Indonesian daily life.

Ogoh-Ogoh: Nyepi Celebrations

When night fell, the Ogoh-Ogoh parade came to life, with massive bamboo and paper figures symbolising the removal of evil spirits.

Students were immersed in the vibrant display, marking the beginning of Nyepi, a day of reflection and silence. Bali embraced complete stillness the following day, offering a unique opportunity for quiet contemplation.

Beach Day: Relax and Tidy

Students kicked off the day with some downtime on the beach, enjoying the peaceful vibes.

After their well-earned break, they rolled up their sleeves to help clear the beach of rubbish, keeping the shores beautiful for everyone.

Five Art Studio: Batik Class

During their time at Five Art Studio, students learned the ancient art of Batik, using wax and paints to create intricate designs on fabric.

This technique, which dates back centuries, allowed the students to express their creativity while learning about a traditional Balinese art form.

Magi Farm: Sustainable Farming Innovation

At Magi Farm, students explored innovative ways to combat food waste through the use of maggots to break down organic waste and turn it into valuable resources.

Learning about innovative, sustainable farming practices showed them how agriculture can positively impact both the environment and local communities.

Indonesian Games: Celebrating Independence Day

As part of the Indonesian Independence Day celebrations, students participated in traditional games that showcased local customs and promoted teamwork.

The games were a fun way to immerse themselves in the culture and strengthen bonds with their peers.

Tegenungan Waterfall: A Natural Wonder

Exploring the Tegenungan Waterfall offered a breathtaking escape, where students enjoyed the cool spray from the cascading water.

Located in a lush jungle setting, this natural wonder allowed for a peaceful moment to reconnect with nature.
