Why are English and maths level 2 so important?

This weekโ€™s blog is directed at our learners of all ages.

This week we have maths and English GCSE resits which are important to gain. Why?

Maths and English at level 2 will benefit you in many ways including in your studies, your future employment, and in your general wellbeing.

Speaking with an adult learner who is retaking her maths GCSE this week, she said she was determined to pass it as she wants to become a paramedic and needs maths level 2 to be able to progress in this area.

Having a good understanding of English and maths is more important than you might realise and across the RNN Group of colleges we offer English and maths support.

They help you communicate with and understand the world around you

Itโ€™s impossible to go a day without using English and maths skills, and a good level of understanding means that you can have more control over things like your finances, communication, and you can gain a better understanding of issues such as politics and current affairs in your local community and potentially get involved and help ensure the best for you and your family and community.

Youโ€™re more likely to get into university

Most university courses look for at least 4/Cs in GCSE English and maths as this shows you have a good understanding of the subjects that are used every day.

Not getting a 4/C in these subjects might limit your chances of getting into university.

English and maths pay well!

Most employers look for at least GCSE grade 4/C in each subject, so English and maths skills could be the difference between you getting the job or promotion you want or not.

People with good GCSE grades in English and maths also earn approximately ยฃ2,000 more than those who donโ€™t.

It’s good for your health

Studies show that higher levels of literacy and numeracy are linked to better health and a longer lifespan. These skills also have a positive impact on your mental health and wellbeing, and confidence too.

So, if you are considering retaking your maths and/or English GCSE/level 2, as well as gain additional skills in English and maths, then the RNN Group of colleges can help you whether you want to do this at Rotherham, North Notts or Dearne Valley Colleges.
